A Saturday with “Rebuilding Together Aurora”

Rebuilding Together Aurora (formerly Christmas in April Aurora) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to helping low-income homeowners, through home renovation and repair.

Its not just the roofs. Every year skilled and unskilled volunteers alike join together in a unique Spring event to repair homes in the Aurora community. Since 1993, the year of the first Rebuilding Day, the Aurora affiliate of the national organization Rebuilding Together rehabilitates and revitalizes the houses of Aurora’s low-income population, particularly the elderly, disabled, and families with children.

“There are 20 homes scheduled to renovate or repair this year. Of those 20, 11 need some type of roof maintenance from simple leak repairs to tear-off & replacement”, said Rod Randall, the Roofing Coordinator for RTA.

One home in the program needed deck repair on a southern facing dorm, with a tear-off and new roof. The cast and crew of Affordable Roofing volunteered there time last Saturday to provide the new roof. All materials were donated by BradCo Supply.

Rebuilding Together provides an opportunity to match skill levels of their volunteers with the work identified in a particular home. All volunteers, be they experienced trade professionals or someone just willing to help, work side-by-side doing the home improvement work, such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical repairs, drywall repairs, weather-stripping, caulking, basement clean-up, replacement of locks and doors, installing handicapped ramps and yard work, most of which is well within the ability of a “handy” man or woman working with a few other willing volunteers.

It is great to see contractors helping people, there should be more of this going on in the world, the old saying what goes around comes around!

Thank you Troy. You are right. If more contractors were involved, the world would be a better place.
