The roof repair guy

People tend to get a visual when you mention the word roofer. Big muscular guy with toolbelt, steel-toed boots, hard hat & maybe just a little bit of roofer’s crack. Roofers from one country to the next are pretty much the same.

The roof repair guyHalf way around the world in West Papua — things are a lot different. Palm-lined tropical beaches make life a little slower and simpler here.

Rainy season takes its toll on roofs in this part of the globe. If your roof springs a leak (and it probably will) then you will be in need of services from the roof repair guy.

Before you go looking for the roof repair guy, there are a few things you need to consider:

  • Wait out the rain: Safety first here, folks! Never go looking for the roof repair guy during rainy season. This is not necessary. The roof repair guy will not come anyway - things flying around in the rain and all. This is not particularly safe and the roof repair guy knows to follow all safety guidelines … and suggestions from his wife.
  • Bring your own materials: The roof repair guy does not provide materials. After the rain stops, it will be necessary for you to find a banana tree and pick enough leaves to effect repairs with. Fronds from sago trees are the preferred home construction material however. The leaf blades of the frond are folded and pinned in parallel series to fashion a shingled roof. Fronds will be harder to find after a good storm — think supply-side economics here. You may want to keep some in stock just for emergencies.
  • Find the roof repair guy: This is easy to do. He will more than likely be sitting in the shade somewhere. Ask around, but hurry doing so. You need to get on the list early. The roof repair guy is always busy after rainy season. Roofing season is also very short and time is money. Bribing the roof repair guy is not out of the question.
  • Don’t seek competitive bidding: There is usually only one roof repair guy per village. You are lucky if you have two. Either way you are stuck with them. Try not to pee any of them off either. You may not get your roof repaired for two or three seasons. The roof repair guy’s best friend went four whole seasons once. Seems he peed off roof repair guy’s wife in that case.
