HelioVolt thin film photovoltaicsHelioVolt is one of several new solar manufacturers using different materials to produce thin-film solar cells.

The company intends to make solar cells for rooftop panels and later get into building- integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), where cells are embedded into roof shingles, blinds, awnings, or other building components.

Entering into the solar-to-roofing material mix is Dow and Global Solar Energy. Both have teamed up to take on the Department of Energy’s Solar America Initiative (SAI) to create building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV) that are efficient and cost effective.

This comes on the heels of two previously announced partnerships in this category with ASTI/Icopal and SRS/CertainTeed .

Colorado based Ascent Solar Technologies, a developer of thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules is entering into cooperation agreements with Icopal SAS of France and Giscosa Sociedad Limitada of Spain. Both agreements focus on the development of new building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roofing products intended to be distributed into the European marketplace.

Europe has some of the top solar markets, including Germany and Spain, where demand has surged due to government incentives to install solar panels. A similar agreement was recently struck between Certainteed and SRS Energy in the development of solar roofing tiles in the North American market.

Per an SRS Energy news item, they have entered into a partnership with CertainTeed Corporation, a North American manufacturer of interior and exterior building products.

Solar Roof ShinglesThe partnership will be used for the advance and development of photovoltaic roofing products, such as solar shingles. Both companies will collaborate on the development of a polymericbased photovoltaic roof tile that generates energy when exposed to radiant energy (light) without compromising the look of the home.
